What's it like to be a Support Analyst?
Support Analysts provide a variety of support to users of computers and other IT systems. These users may be customers or staff within a business. They oversee an organisation’s customer support software and workflows to ensure high levels of customer satisfaction.
Tasks and duties
- Delivering IT support to end users in a remote or in-person capacity.
- Ensuring support systems run correctly and tickets are processed in a timely manner.
- Setting up new user accounts on IT systems and websites.
- Assisting with installing and maintaining networks.
- Accessing databases and analysing information.
- Instructing others on the proper use of computer hardware and software.
- Monitoring incoming support requests and analysing the overall quality of support provided.
Support Analysts have advanced computer skills and the ability to guide others in the proper use of computers and software. They work for organisations in many industries, including IT, media and communications, and financial, professional and technical services.

You may be able to work as a Support Analyst without any formal qualifications if you can demonstrate equivalent experience and capabilities. However, a Vocational Education and Training (VET) or university qualification in IT or a related field may give you an advantage.
- 1.Complete a tertiary qualification in IT. This could be a Certificate IV in Information Technology (ICT40120) or a Diploma of Information Technology (ICT50220), which usually take one year. Alternatively, complete a bachelor degree in IT or a related field. This usually takes three years.
- 2.Build experience in an entry level IT support role.
- 3.Develop skills and experience using support software such as Zoho or Zendesk.
- 4.Consider learning about Structured Query Language (SQL) or another coding language to improve your career options.
- 5.Consider joining a professional society such as the Information Technology Professionals Association (ITPA) to expand your professional network and opportunities.
